Northwest Territories Massage Therapists Association

The Northwest Territories Massage Therapists Association (NWTMTA) was established in 1999. Some like-minded massage therapists saw the need for an association that could represent massage therapists in the north on the municipal, territorial and national level. In 2001, the NWTMTA gained membership in the Canadian Massage Therapist Alliance.

While massage therapy is not regulated in the NWT, members of the NWTMTA are required to provide proof of membership with a provincial massage therapy association requiring a minimum of 2200 hours of training and successful completion of a competency exam, or proof of registration with a regulatory College of Massage Therapists.  These requirements ensure that NWTMTA massage therapists meet an accepted professional standard.

NWT healthcare does not cover massage therapy; however, many extended health benefit plans include coverage for treatments provided by a registered massage therapist. Check with your policy provider for details. The NWT WSCC requires that massage therapy be provided by a member of the NWTMTA. NWTMTA Members are also approved massage-therapy providers for the RCMP and Veterans' Affairs.
