It is your responsibility to verify the requirements of the area you plan to practice in.

In Yellowknife,'
"massage therapist" means a person who belongs to a provincial or territorial Massage Therapist Association affiliated with the Canadian Massage Therapist Alliance or who is a member of a Provincially or Territorially regulated College of Massage Therapists; ' (Definitions as amended by By-law No. 4095, Jan 10/00.)

4. Do I need to join the NWTMTA to practice in the Northwest Territories?

No, membership in the NWTMTA is not required. However, for reimbursement, more insurers are requiring that the massage therapist must be a member in the jurisdiction they are practicing in. You may find it helpful to investigate the requirements of applicable insurers.

5. Why would I join the NWTMTA?
  • Referral Service - The NWTMTA website has a "Find a Therapist" link. This link is often accessed by members of the public looking for an RMT.  In addition, other NWTMTA members are often looking for other qualified RMTs to refer clients to. Less than two client referrals would pay for your annual NWTMTA membership.
  • The NWTMTA is the voice of massage therapists with government and insurers, and we continue to work towards regulation of our profession in the NWT.
  • The NWTMTA establishes a high standard of care recognised by insurers. We strongly feel that Northerners deserve the same high quality of care as those in regulated jurisdictions.
